Writing a Ceremony That Feels Personal

Whether you're a friend who's been asked to officiate or a professional celebrant, a ceremony script built around the couple's actual story makes all the difference.

Short Modern Script (15–20 Minutes)

Opening

"Welcome, everyone. We're gathered here today not just to witness a wedding, but to celebrate a love story that's been building for [X] years — and that starts a new chapter right now.

I'm [Name], and I have the incredible honor of officiating today. I've known [Bride] and [Groom] for [time], and I can tell you that what you're about to see is completely, genuinely real."

The Love Story

"[Couple names] met [how they met]. What started as [brief story] became something neither of them planned for.

[2–3 sentences about who they are together — what makes them right for each other, a specific moment that captures the relationship]."

The Vows

"We've arrived at the part where these two make their promises.

[Name], repeat after me: I take you as my partner...

[Name], repeat after me: I take you as my partner..."

Ring Exchange

"These rings are a symbol of the promises just made — no beginning, no end, a perfect circle.

[Name], place the ring on [Name]'s finger and repeat: 'With this ring, I thee wed.'"

Pronouncement

"It is my great privilege and joy to pronounce you married. You may kiss each other."

Closing

"Ladies and gentlemen — for the first time — [Name] and [Name]!"

What Makes a Good Officiant Script

  • Personalization — Reference the couple's actual story, not generic wedding language
  • Pacing — Build to the vows; don't front-load with too much
  • The crowd — Acknowledge guests, make them feel included
  • Transitions — Each section should flow naturally to the next
  • Practice — Read it aloud three times before the ceremony
  • Common Officiant Mistakes

  • Reading the entire script without looking up
  • Going over 20 minutes without a very good reason
  • Using language the couple didn't approve in advance
  • Forgetting to cue the ring bearer
  • Write yours in minutes
